Pizza Mug Cozy

Now I'm back at work, I've started taking my travel mug with me for a cheeky tea on the bus in the morning. I decided it might be a good idea to crochet a wee mug cozy for my travel mug to try and keep my tea warmer in the car journey when I drop Ivy off at her childminder and then drive to get a bus.

I already have a cool felt Mario mug cozy I made a wee while ago, but it doesn't fit my new travel mug, and probably isn't as warm as it could be, so I decided to make a new crochet one.

Ages ago I had seen this awesome pizza granny square so I knew I wanted to use the pizza as part of the cozy. However, it was a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be. I ended up doing one less round of the yellow, because it was already huge, but it still turned out a bit bigger than I meant it too! Whoops! I also did a few less pepperoni because I didn't think I would be able to fit them all on with it being a bit smaller and all.

To make the actual cup cozy I used this pattern from Busy in Brooklyn. I had to do a few extra chains to make it fit around my cup, and then because my cup gets a bit skinner about half way down, I swapped to doing rows of half treble crochet and throwing in a couple of decreases every row to make sure it would work up quickly and it fit the skinnier section. I really have no idea what I did to be honest - I just kept going until it was the right fit/long enough to fit the pizza on it.

Like I said, it's a bit bigger than I meant it to be, so it's a bit of a pain to actually keep on while I'm drinking from it, but it does a very good job of keeping my tea warm while I'm driving, so I'm happy with it. I really want to make more crochet pizzas though, they are so cute!

Shark Scarf

I've had the wool to knit this scarf for Donald for ages now, but obviously Christmas got in the way. However, it was the first thing I cast on in 2017 and my first finished object. It's taken me a little while longer than I meant it to because it turns out everyone I know if pregnant, so I'm obviously on a baby crafting kick too.

This pattern is from Knitted Animal Scarves, Mitts, and Socks by Fiona Goble. The book is a mixture of patterns for adults and kids, and while this scarf didn't actually say which is was for, I think it may have been aimed at children. It's more a crossover scarf than a wrap it round your neck a few times scarf.

How cute is it? It was done on 10mm needles with chunky yarn, so it worked up super fast. Which is handy because I basically had to knit it twice. I made what I thought was a mistake in the number of stitches I had, and I couldn't find where I'd gone wrong, so I ripped the whole thing back. However, when I knitted it the second time, I realised it's the pattern that's wrong. There's a decrease, then a section that asks you to repeat the last few rows, which includes the decrease, but the stitch count does not take into account that second decrease. So I just missed out one decrease to keep the stitch count the same as the pattern so I didn't get stressed about it.

That aside, the pattern was great. You increase up and then decrease back down again, so there's very little casting on and off. You also knit the tail as part of the body, and pick up stitches to knit the fin, so there's no sewing on either. Brilliant!

Though I somehow bought three balls of yarn for this scarf and I only actually needed one (though the pattern said I'd need two, so I don't even know why I bought three, but I did buy a different brand)! So confusing!
