395 - Friday Favs Top 10

First of all let me say that I hurt my ankle last week after skating. After hoping it would get better on its own, I went to the hospital and it turns out I've got an inflamed tendon. Unfortunately that means I can't skate tomorrow. I'm beyond upset, but at least I can still go along, cheer my ass off and then win the after party.

Oh wow this crochet is amazing.

Lovely outdoor bunk bed!

I love this Christmas card. So simple and so cute.

I love this idea. I can only imagine how nice it would look if you got some sexy fabric.

All the Johhny Depps.

Such cute little felt ghosts.

I love this colour, and the nail art.

Cute black gloves.

This is so cute! Especially with the little banana.

Frankenstein pouch. Amazing.

394 - Summer Shovin'

Image via
On Saturday Fierce Valley Roller Girls will be holding their first ever intra-league bout. Basically we're playing against ourselves! The bout is Grease themed so we're the T-Stop Birds and the Rink Ladies.

I'm on the T-Stop birds team and I'm very excited! This will be my third bout this year! I can't believe it! I didn't think I'd ever make it to bouting in public, let alone bouting in three before July is even upon us!

Of course there should be loads of awesome photos (hopefully ha ha) after the event that I can share! I'm very excited. Even more excited for the afterparty. There will be derby love all round no matter who wins!

393 - Crochet lessons

So for my birthday Donald's mum and sister bought me a crochet lesson at The Bead Shop Scotland. Crochet is something I very much want to be able to do, but for some reason seems to make my brain melt.

The lesson was in their Haddington shop, so Donald drove me through and we had a nice Greggs lunch in the car. I did have a mini freak out prior to the lesson where I was convinced I was going to look like an idiot and people were going to laugh at me, but eventually plucked up the courage to go in.

The lessons took place in a cute little flat above the actual shop, in a room that I can only describe as my dream craft room! It was so lovely. I was joined by three other ladies on our crochet adventure.

The class was taken by Jo Lochhead, and showed us how to do a chain stitch, a slip stitch, double and treble crochet. I have to say, I was a little confused by the name to start with because I started learning online using American lessons. Why are the names different?!? That's just crazy!

To start with we were given a little fact sheet with all the notes we would need for the lesson on it and a nice chunky crochet hook which we got to keep at the end!

Crochet class

We used really thick wool so we could see what we were doing, and practised rows of all the stitches! We also had a crack at starting a granny square!

Crochet progress

The green row is the chain, the red row is double crochet into the chain (the hardest part!), the first bit of pink is double crochet on it's own and then the bigger part of pink is triple crochet!

I have to say the two hours just flew by, and I felt like I had learnt so much. I guess having that little bit of time with someone talking you through each stage and telling you where you're going wrong is just what you need when you're stuck! The triple crochet looked so scary to start with, now I can do it like nobodies business!

If you take a class you get 10% off anything you buy at the shop on the same day, and as I had £20 of vouchers to spend (also from Donald's family), I was right down to the shop on my way out to spend my monies.

Crochet and knitting goodies

I got two lovely books, some of the chunky yarn we had been using earlier and some pom pom makers just because I liked the idea of them.

I'm very keen to go on my online crochet lessons now because I feel like I can handle it! I just need to not get my names mixed up. Last night I even had a crack at my Cath Kidston crochet kit and check it out!

Holy cow batman! It's a granny square!

That my friends is the beginning of a granny square! I'm so happy. I stopped because the next two rounds are all double crochet going into like all the holes along the edges and I got a bit confused, but I plan to tackle it again when I next have a free night.

So all in all it was an awesome birthday present and I feel a lot more confident in my ability than I did before. I also know I can fix mistakes a lot easier in crochet than I ever seem to be able to in knitting AND it's a lot hard to drop/pick up stitch. PHEW!

392 - Bake Once a Month June

So after the awful experience that was my brownies last month, this month I decided to make M&M cookies, which I found on A Spoonful of Sugar.

I forgot how I found this blog, but I have to say, I totally love it. It always has lovely things on it. When I saw these cookies had condensed milk in them, I knew I had to give them a go.

June baking

I have to say, the cookie dough tasted amazing, and I probably ate more of it than I should. I had to use full size M&M's instead of mini ones because we don't get mini ones in the UK (well not in my Asda anyway). The batter made 3 batches of cookies, the last of which were a little browner than the others due to my forgetting to set the oven timer.

They tasted yummy, though I think I could have got them a bit thinner perhaps. Still lovely!

For my second sketchy Saturday, I decided to draw the Little Mermaid as a zombie (combining two of my favourite things).

Here's a link to the orginal image.

It was quite hard to try and fit everything in because it's quite busy, but I'm really happy it turned out quite well.

387 - An apple a day.

Since it's nearing the end of school term over here, I've been seeing a lot of lovely apple themed crafts going around designed for kids to give to teachers. While obviously none of these gifts are aimed at me, I find them ridiculously cute, so I thought I would share some of my favourite (though some of them are just apple awesome and probably not something a child should give (see rotten apple embroidery pattern ha ha!).

How cute is that little apple button?!

386 - TUNES!

So today is a very music based day. Not only am I going to see Blink 182, but I also just sold my Paramore ticket to someone else (due to bad planning on my part I'm actually on holiday for the Paramore gig! GOD!). So while I'm such a musical mood, I thought I would share five of my favourite bands ever! I think I like quite a lot of different music and my iPod is a bit mental. I like cheesy pop and indie music, but my heart lies with pop punk/emo type music.

1. Paramore.

While I already had my hair red before I heard of Paramore, I have to say, it's probably one of the reason I keep coming back to it. Hayley has the most amazing hair ever. I remember buying their first album on import from Amazon and I've been in love ever since.

2. Fall Out Boy.

I am such a Fall Out Boy fan girl. It makes me so sad that 1) they split up and 2) there last album was total fail. But their old stuff is still my favourite, especially Take This To Your Grave.

3. Panic! At the Disco.

Nothing can beat how good Panic! At the Disco's album was. End of.

4. Four Year Strong.

If you want to see me dance like a total tool, stick this song on. In fact I have a video of me doing the very thing, but I think I'll keep that off here thank you very much!

5. Hit the Lights.

Hit the Lights are right up there in my favourite bands right now. Skip Schools, Start Fights is an amazing album, with not one single bad song on it.

And now to look forward to Blink tonight! WOO!

385 - I don't care if you dye your hair you'll always be a little red head bitch.

So hair. You may not be interested in endless posts about my hair, but let me tell you, I am. I'm willing my hair to grow faster and faster so I can dye it. Not that I have to impose this ban on myself, but I feel I would like to leave the blonde in for a while as it cost me so much effort.

So I know I was leaning towards the orange/red side of the colours. My plan was probably to dye it orange for a while and then bring the red back in. Orange was always in my plan, even if it was orange ends or something like this (which I would need very long hair for and even then I can't imagine the upkeep!).

And then I saw this advert.

That red is ridic amazing. I've fallen totally in love with red red red. Both my mum and Donald agree. I can only imagine how lovely red will look right on the blonde, without risking the orange in between. I'm not sure I can get/easily maintain the orange I want, but red has so many option. And so I've decided when it comes to dying my hair again, I'm going back to the red. But probably a different red from what I used to use. I'd like a brighter red instead of the quite dark stuff I used to use.

So basically, I'm totally smitten with the hair I used to have. Ha ha! Enjoy some more red hair porn, and help me wish my hair longer.

382 - Smashbook Challenge

I found this Smashbook challenge on Pinterest the other day, and I think it might be something fun to help me make pages when I'm maybe in the mood for scrapbooking, but don't have something special that happened to scrapbook about (like a birthday or a gig).

I might not use them all, but I'm going to try my best to do a lot of them. They're so cool! I think I'll write up the list in my craft notebook so I can keep track of the ones I do.

Do you scrapbook/Smashbook? I definitely think you should give this a try!

380 - I want to ride my bicycle

I have a bike. I bought it when I used to live in town a couple of years ago, and when I ended up moving back home with my mum, a very tall boy trying to impress me let me keep it in his garage. Well when I moved in with that tall boy about a year later, the bike stayed where it was.

Often when I walk to work along the water of Leith I think how lovely, and faster, it would be to cycle to work. We even have lovely indoor bike racks at work. However, I don't have anywhere to store it, and I don't think my poor bike would last very long outside it Leith.

Me and Donald are hoping we can get a house eventually, and when we do, I hope to get my bike out a lot more. Until now, I can only dream of all the lovely things I can add to my bike. Luckily Pinterest offers a lot of inspiration!

I very much look forward to riding my bike again.

379 - Couch to 5k

Trainers lose their whiteness! Running in the rain ftw.

So if you wondered why I was sharing a picture of my dirty trainers in this week's Sunday Snaps, it's because I've started running couch the 5k.

For those of you who don't know what it is, it's basically an 8 week programme that can get you from having no running skill, to being able to run 5k. You run three times a week and the runs last about half an hour each, usually with a mix of walking and running.

A lot of people from my work have taken part in couch to 5k, but I was really pushed to do it after Ever So Juliet blogged about starting it herself.

So here's my tools. My trainers, which you've obviously already seen. I also bought myself a lovely running belt to keep my iPhone and keys in when I run.

I also downloaded two apps for my iPhone to help me with my running. First up I got 5K Runner, which tells me what to do for my couch to 5k runs. It makes my music is bit quieter and gives me instructions, and also tells me when I'm half way through, so I can turn round and head home.

Running apps

I also downloaded the Nike+ app, which I've only used twice but is pretty cool. It tracks how far you run, how fast you run kms and actually tracks you via GPS so you can watch your run on the map later. So cool.

Running apps

Running apps

I'm hoping once Couch to 5k is done, I'll be able to keep using the Nike+ app to do distance/time specific runs which should be awesome.

I'm finishing off week 2 tomororw and then starting week 3 on Saturday, and I have to say I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm hoping it's going to help my endurance for skating, which can only be a good thing.

378 - Bzz bzz bzz bzz bees!

Today I'm going to share with you something I've loved for pretty much as long as I can remember. Bees. This may seem like a strange thing, but when I was little, I collected bees to a crazy level. You'd be surprised how much stuff you can get out there which has bees on it/is bee related.

I still have my whole collection and I might show it to you one time if I get around to photographing it, but let's just say, I think bees are awesome.

When I come across something bee related on Pinterest or Etsy, I still let out a little squeak, and get really excited. I dunno what it is about the little guys, but I just love them (not just soft toys and stuff, I actually really like the insect too).

I thought I would make up a lovely treasury of bee related thing, which if I'm honest, is doing nothing but making me want to fill my world with bee things all over again. Luckily I have enough in my mum's attic already!

375 - Sketchy Saturday 1

So in the same style as moodboard Monday, I've decided to do a few weeks of "sketchy Saturday". Another one of my new years resolutions is to draw at least 10 things. I love drawing but I never seem to make the time for it (proven by the fact that I covered my most recent sketch book with magazine clippings so long ago I can't remember when, and yet the only things that's ever graced its pages was the sketch of my IT embroidery piece, which I then tore out).

Again a bid to make me make the time, I've decided to schudule these posts.

So here's the first one.

C3PO and R2D2

I copied it from this picture.

To be honest, most of the stuff I draw is copying cartoons, because it seems to be the style that works best for me. If I draw real life things, it tends to be flowers or insects. So yeah, most of these drawings will probably be cartoon copies. I'll try and post a link to the original if I copy something.

373 - Sponsored Skate

So let's talk roller derby for a minute shall we? After all, it's what half this blog is named after.

On June 16th, Fierce Valley Roller Girls, along with a number of other leagues from all over the UK and Ireland will be taking part in sponsored skate.

Basically, between all the leagues, we're trying to skate enough laps of a standard derby track to cover the same distance that the Olympic Torch is going to cover, which is 3787 miles (which is 103890 laps for those who don't know!).

All the leagues are fund raising from the same JustGiving page, which I think you should all go check out and donate even a little bit. As you can see we're quite a way off our £1000 target, but hopefully on the lead up to the day, and with fundraising on the day itself, we should make it! All money raised is going to Sports Aid, which "helps young British sportsmen and women to achieve their ambitions by supporting them during the defining years of their careers."

Image via
Also, if you live anywhere near Grangemouth in Scotland, then please come along to Grangemouth Sports Complex on June 16th between 5pm and 9pm. You can watch us skate our feet off, grab a cake or two, and find out all about the lovely world of roller derby!

I'm excited to see how many laps I can skate. And if you feel lovely and generous enough to donate, that would be swell!

372 - Christmas makes

So it's happened. It's June and I've made my first Christmas makes.

Christmas coaster

Christmas coaster

These were the coaster kits that I got out of Hobbycraft the other day. They were quite fun to make, though all the tiles were the same size, and it didn't tell you to cut them, yet in the picture on the front of the pack, the tiles had clearly been cut into different sizes.

The tiles were also stuck on with what was essentially a huge piece of double sided tape, which made it a bit awkward to say the least.

But for £1.49 or whatever they were, I guess I can't really complain. Also, they were probably aimed at children...oh well.

371 - My Cameras

Okay, so if you follow me on Twitter or anything like that, you'll have known that I spent my birthday money on not one, but two cameras! I've been excited to show them off for a little while now, so without further ado, here they are.

First up, my Diana Mini.

How lovely is it? I wanted a Diana to start with, but after a little research (as I know nothing about cameras) I found out that the film for a Diana is quite expensive and quite hard and expensive to get developed. A friend pointed out that a Diana Mini took regular 35mm film, and so I was totally on board.

There are so many cute ones you can get, but after finding this leopard print one I was sold. How lovely is it? I've yet to take any photos with it, as I've only had all the stuff about a week, but I plan on going out at the week and attempting to shoot a roll.

And next up, my Instax Mini 25.

I've wanted an Instax for a while now. I used to have a Polaroid, but since they got rid of the film for them, it's not worth the money buying the non-brand film or the almost out of date stuff. I can get two packs of Insax film for around £12, which is pretty good in my book.

I got this lovely pink camera off eBay, which a pack of rainbow film and the lovely photo frame you can see in the last photo above.

I've shot a couple of photos with this and it's just as awesome as I imagined!

And finally, I bought batteries and film to go along with my babies.

I've never been much of a non-digital camera person, but I'm excited to get using these. The Instax is also going to be great for my Smash Book, and I've already got one stuck in there. I also think both cameras will be great when I go on holidays with the boy later in the year! Exciting!
